The ground you're standing on has been lived in for almost seven centuries — and wiped nearly clean three separate times. Hold that contradiction in mind as you look around.

Zaryadye first turns up in documents from thirteen sixty-five. The name itself describes the place: "beyond the rows" — beyond the trading rows that once stood by the Kremlin and Kitай-gorod, the old walled merchant quarter next door. This was a dense working district: streets, churches, courtyards of merchants and craftsmen. Almost none of that medieval fabric survives — a few fragments remain, mainly the churches along Varvarka Street, which you can see to your right. The twentieth century buried the rest.

First came a Stalin-era skyscraper. In the late nineteen-forties, this plot was marked for one of eight planned towers, and the foundation was laid. The tower itself was never built — Stalin died in nineteen fifty-three, and the project was shelved. But the foundation stayed. And it was on that very foundation, in the nineteen-sixties, that the Hotel Rossiya went up. It opened in nineteen sixty-seven as the largest hotel in the world. For nearly forty years it dominated this entire riverbank — for generations of Muscovites, it simply was Zaryadye, even if few people actually loved the architecture.

The Rossiya closed in January two thousand six. Taking it down took years: the above-ground structure came down fairly quickly, but dismantling the foundations underground wasn't finished until spring two thousand fifteen. For almost eleven years, right in the heart of Moscow, two hundred meters from the Kremlin, there was just a vast empty lot. Weeds took over while the city argued about what this place should become.

◆

The answer wasn't obvious. An office center was proposed, then a luxury district, then a government complex. In twenty twelve, the city chose a park instead. Construction began in twenty fourteen — making Zaryadye Park the first major new park Moscow had built in almost seventy years.

Look up at the glass canopy overhead — it's known as the "glass bark." It's more than a striking roofline: underneath it, the park creates a controlled microclimate, an enclosed public space that's still technically outdoors. Architecturally, it's designed to stitch the natural landscape together with the city's infrastructure.

And the four natural zones around you — forest, steppe, tundra, and flooded meadow — aren't just landscaping for show. The plants were chosen and planted to mimic the actual growing conditions of their home regions. Moscow as a meeting point for a vast, varied country — that's the idea this park expresses through botany.

And finally, the floating bridge. Walk out onto it: it's a cantilevered platform over the Moscow River with no supports underneath — nothing holding it up but the overhang itself. From the end of it, you can see the Kremlin's towers, Varvarka Street with its churches, and the new riverside embankment, all at once. Three layers of Moscow in a single view — medieval, Soviet, and today.

◆

Underneath all this concrete, by the way, construction and archaeological digs uncovered layers of that medieval settlement. Beneath the Soviet-era foundation lies a Moscow from the thirteen-hundreds that had almost entirely vanished. Seven centuries, laid bare in cross-section.

Ask me about St. Barbara's Church on Varvarka Street — the one facing straight onto the park. There's a story about why it was rebuilt three times, and one of the people behind the design might surprise you.

What should we tell you about? Your own street would do. moygid dot online.
